The Maryland Renaissance Festival (MDRF) will return for its annual 9 weekends of merriment in Crownsville, Maryland on August 27, 2022. Set in a fictional 16th Century English Tudor village called Revel Grove on grounds totaling 25 acres, the fair will feature an estimated 130 craft shops and 42 food booths. Among all the renaissance fairs held in the United States, MDRF is the second largest.
The 1,300 participants who populate Revel Grove are comprised of 400 fair employees, 700 vendor workers, and 200 performers who are stage entertainers or period village characters. The Maryland Renaissance Fair entertains visitors with eight large theaters, four small stages inside taverns, a special children’s area, and a jousting tiltyard that seats 3,000 spectators. Elephant and camel rides are also available for a fee.
Visitors will be transported to an era of knights, ladies-in-waiting, venison and tankards of mead. Traveling minstrels will enchant you with music as you stroll the fairgrounds, a curious juxtaposition of the 16th and 21st Centuries. Fairgoers are encouraged to wear or rent renaissance costumes to heighten their sense of participation.
Jousting, sword swallowing, maypole dancing, archery, and other forms of English entertainment during the time of King Henry VIII await them. The MDRF also worships Shakespeare, and his stage plays are performed every year. For those seeking mementoes, artisans will offer handmade goods, including jewelry, art, and clothing, for sale.
