Annapolis’ First Sunday Arts Festival Returns May 1, 2022April 15, 2022
The United States Naval Academy (USNA) sets aside one week a year for a celebration of its latest graduation class. It is a week filled with pride, tradition, and ceremonies that cap every midshipman’s career in Annapolis.
2022’s Commissioning Week will begin on Friday, May 20, and end with the famous graduation ceremony at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Friday, May 27 that culminates with the graduates throwing their white caps high into the air. However, the most spectacular sights will be the breathtaking air shows that are delivered by the world-famous Blue Angels.
Blue Angels History
Featuring aviators from the Navy and Marines, the Blue Angels is the U.S. Navy’s flight demonstration squadron founded in 1946. Currently piloting the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet, the Blue Angels still use aerial maneuvers and techniques first seen during their inaugural season.
Approximately 11 million people attend the squadron’s air shows annually. As part of their public relations duties, the Blue Angels team members visit schools and hospitals and see more than 50,000 people each year. An estimated 260 million spectators have been thrilled by the Blue Angels over the years.
Fans who come to watch the Blue Angels air show congregate on the Severn River’s banks in the Naval Academy campus to get a great view of the astounding aerial acrobatics. Below is the Blue Angels’ schedule during Commissioning Week 2022.
Tuesday, May 24 – Over the Severn River between 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for circling and arrival and 2:00 p.m. for flight rehearsal.
Wednesday, May 25 – Over the Severn River between 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for a flight demonstration.
Friday, May 27 – Above the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for the traditional flyover during graduation at 10:04 a.m.
