Celebrate the 27th year of Maryland’s coolest tradition, the Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge to be held from January 27 to February 4, 2023. Those courageous enough to dip into the chilly waters of the Chesapeake Bay will help raise much-needed funds for Special Olympics Maryland. This is a festive charitable event held annually on the scenic shore of Sandy Point State Park.
The good work of the Polar Bear Plunge (PBP) on behalf of special athletes warms the hearts of 10,000 courageous swimmers so much that they’ll brave a swim through the frosty waves of the Chesapeake Bay. Don’t worry if you aren’t crazy enough to dip your toes in near-freezing water. You can still root for the polar bears by cheering and donating. You can also participate in family-friendly activities inside a big heated tent on the beach.
Officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1988, the Special Olympics World Games is held every four years. In 1993, the first World Games held outside the United States occurred at the winter games of Salzburg and Schladming, Austria.
The Special Olympics organization provides athletic training and competitions to more than five million adults and children with intellectual disabilities. There are more than 100,000 local, national, and regional competitions annually in 172 countries.
Most of PBP’s proceeds are raised from each participant who pledges $100 or more for the right to swim in the chilly Chesapeake Bay and help support more than 4,340 Maryland special athletes. The 27th Annual Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge schedule is below.
