Beach Day at Sandy Point State Park
July 12, 2023Sandy Point State Park is open all year long on the northwestern shore of Chesapeake Bay and offers breathtaking views of the waterway and the magnificent bridge that spans it. The following will highlight what a day’s visit to Sandy Point can offer.
Beaches
The park’s South Beach offers sunbathing areas after a refreshing Chesapeake swim. Lifeguards are on duty 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends and holidays, from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Nature Viewing
Bird watching is a favorite pastime for many visitors at Sandy Point. The park is a prime location for spotting migratory waterfowl on the Eastern Flyway. You may not know about the park’s Corcoran Woods, a nature preserve that is 215 acres of forest.
Hiking
The Symbi Trail provides views of a pine forest, leading to marshes filled with wildlife. A short trail close to the parking lot for small craft gives birdwatchers a wooded cover ideal for watching Maryland’s distinctive waterfowl. There are also 4 miles of trails for hiking and jogging in the Corcoran Woods.
Picnicking
Grassy picnic areas are next to South Beach, where bathrooms and a children’s playground are also located. For those who like to barbecue, grills and picnic tables are available. The park’s marina store offers supplies for cooking.
Fishing & Crabbing
Fishing is allowed in designated areas, including rock jetties and a fishing pier. Fishing equipment, bait, and supplies can be purchased at the marina store. The Chesapeake Bay blue crab is delicious, and they can be caught from the fishing and crabbing pier at the boat ramps’ south end.
Boating
Park personnel are very proud of the park’s marina facility, which includes 22 boat launching ramps. Weather permitting, motorboats may be rented during late spring, summer, and early fall.
