In 1977, Jules Smith founded the Maryland Renaissance Festival, held for the first time in Columbia, Maryland. The Flying Karamazov Brothers and Penn & Teller were the star entertainers at the festival’s debut. The fair moved to its current Crownsville home in 1985. MDRF was an Elizabethan-style fair till 1989, when the reign of King Henry VIII became its theme.
