Reprising nine weekends of festivities in Crownsville, Maryland, on Saturday, August 26, the Maryland Renaissance Festival (MDRF) beckons ye. Located in Revel Grove, a fictional 16th-century English Tudor village, the fair will be ready to bring merriment for the 46th year.
Set on 25 acres, the fair will feature over 130 craft shops and 42 food booths. The 1,300-strong population of Revel Grove is made up of 700 vendors, 400 honest employees, and 200 performers who are stage entertainers or period village characters. The MDRF is the second-largest Renaissance fair held in the USA.
In 1977, Jules Smith founded the Maryland Renaissance Festival, held for the first time in Columbia, Maryland. The Flying Karamazov Brothers and Penn & Teller were the star entertainers at the festival’s debut. The fair moved to its current Crownsville home in 1985. MDRF was an Elizabethan-style fair till 1989, when the reign of King Henry VIII became its theme.
Those who seek Shakespearean entertainment will be pleased to find performances in eight large theaters and four small stages inside taverns. There is also room for 3,000 to view battles of knights on horseback in a jousting tiltyard. There is a special play area for kids, and elephant and camel rides are available for a fee.
Be ready to be transported to a bygone era of knights, ladies-in-waiting, mugs of mead, and delicious forest venison. Meandering minstrels will delight you with charming tunes as you travel the fairgrounds, a befuddling mix of the 16th and 21st centuries.
You and your merry band are called to wear or rent Renaissance costumes to feel more at home and in character. Prepare to be amazed by sword swallowing, maypole dancing, archery, and other forms of English amusement.
Artisans will sell handmade goods for those seeking souvenirs from this period, including jewelry, art, and clothing.
