Shamrock the Dock 2023 to Kick Off Irish Week – Part 1
February 21, 2023Many chefs find their guests saying their seafood tastes better in winter. A variety of seafood creatures attain their physical prime during the colder months, while others are the exception. For example, mussels spawn in winter and lose much of their weight.
Why Winter Seafood is Healthier
As the bay waters are cold during winter, the flesh of fish and other seafood contain a greater fat content to keep the fish insulated. This results in dishes that are healthier and tastier during the winter. Fish is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids that help keep your mind and heart in good shape during the winter.
Research has found that omega-3 helps alleviate depression. Omega-3 fatty acids and other nutrients found in fish provide health benefits, decreasing the risk of heart disease. Medical experts recommend eating more seafood because its omega-3 content surpasses alternatives such as walnuts and vegetables.
Cold Keeps Seafood Fresher
Winter’s colder air temperatures keep seafood fresher for longer periods. This is especially true when seafood is brought aboard and sorted on the decks of fishing ships before being stored in freezers.
This is also the case when they are delivered and displayed at seafood markets. In addition, the cooler winter air makes it easier for refrigerators to do their jobs because they don’t have to work as hard.
The result is seafood is fresher and of higher quality during the winter. Thus, your meals revolving around seafood will taste better.
Oysters at Their Best
Many believe oysters are a great example of seafood that’s a better dining experience during the winter. Spawning during the summer months leads to oysters turning soft and losing flavor. However, oysters shucked during the winter tend to be firmer and deliver a briny and brilliant flavor.
