Shamrock the Dock 2023 to Kick Off Irish Week – Part 1
February 21, 2023
Action! at the Annapolis Film Festival 2023
March 6, 2023Every year the folks in Anne Arundel County greet spring and the start of boating season by torching their winter socks at the Annapolis Oyster Roast & Sock Burning. For the 12th year, the Annapolis Maritime Museum will host the festivities on Saturday, March 18, 2023.
The Sock Burning quickly turned into an Annapolis tradition when it originated in 1977. The ceremony has locals reciting “Ode to the Equinox” as they remove their winter socks and throw them into a fire. It is a bit odd, but loads of fun. Say farewell to winter and watch this humorous rite of spring over a long weekend in beautiful and historic Annapolis.
Spring Celebration
The Annapolis Maritime Museum (AMM) hosts this celebration, welcoming spring for all who love the Chesapeake Bay. A ticket provides live entertainment, all-you-can-eat roasted and raw oysters, admission into the museum, and a chance to win the oyster-sucking contest. The 2019 event raised $60,000 for the Museum’s education programs.
Performing an eclectic selection of tunes, The Eastport Oyster Boys will have you clapping and dancing. The event also provides family-friendly activities and fascinating exhibits illustrating the Chesapeake Bay’s maritime heritage and the importance of oysters to the region’s ecology.
Annapolis Maritime Museum Mission
The mission of the Annapolis Maritime Museum (AMM) is to educate visitors of all ages about the city’s maritime heritage and Chesapeake Bay’s ecology. Based in a beautiful waterfront location with a spectacular view of the Chesapeake Bay, AMM’s educational program accommodates more than 5,000 students from the region annually, promoting environmental awareness and stewardship of the area’s waters.
